Who gets to define marriage?

by Wayne D. Turner
We narrow-minded Christians are being bashed in the news again. It’s the people of North Carolina who have caused this. We were just minding our own business when these Carolinians decided they didn’t want a political redefinition of the long-standing institution of marriage. How dare they!

How is it that people think they can suddenly decide to redefine an entity? It seems outrageous to me that marriage can be defined down through history as a union between a man and a woman, and then suddenly society decides to rewrite the definition. Really?

Why stop there? Why not stop using sexist definitions to identify people altogether? Let’s just take this concept all the way down the road once and for all and be done with it. Everyone should just be categorized as “people units”—no more “men” or “women”—no more “male” or “female”—just “people units.” We could just all be referred to as “punits.” Then we could make laws that forbid anyone from making any kind of sexist distinctions between “punits.”

Ridiculous? The media already has been forced to do the same with people who commit crimes. It has been unacceptable for years now to identify a perpetrator by his race unless it is necessary for his/her capture. It’s considered racist to do so.

Well, I’m pretty sure the day is coming when it will no longer be acceptable to identify people with a sexual designation either. I mean, it is getting complicated in our society, wouldn’t you agree. It is no longer a case of just being male or female. Some people today prefer to be known as a male with female attributes while others prefer to be known as a female with male attributes. Still others have sought medical procedures to make the physical changes as well. So, we’re already being forced in our society to abandon the millennia-old designations of “male” and “female.” Whoever dreamed that we would come to a place where even the sex of a person would be disputed?

So, if it is becoming socially unacceptable to consider a person’s race or even their physiological sexual composition, why are we so surprised that this same society now wants to redefine “marriage” as well. Where does all of this eventually end? I really can’t imagine what the logical end of such nonsense will be.

Interestingly enough, even many conservative pastors like myself, are willing to see state laws defining “civil unions” as the legal equivalent of marriage. But that doesn’t seem to be good enough for our liberal legislators. They want us to rewrite the definitions of words. Oh, sorry, that’s already being done. If you have an old dictionary, check the definition of “marriage” and compare it to your new dictionary.

Four paragraphs ago I was making a joke about dropping “male/female” designations for “punits” (people units) instead. Now, I’m thinking that’s coming. When it does, I want credit for the term “punits.”

Lastly, we Christians are being accused of trying to cram our Bible down society’s throat on this issue. True, the Bible does define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. However, that definition existed in this world long before Moses wrote down the first five books of the Bible. Hammurabi’s Code of Laws made that designation in the Babylonian Empire 300 years or so before Moses.

This is the age in which common sense abandoned us.
